Report Cards and Impending Laryngitis

Wednesday night, I've got a supply teacher booked for tomorrow. I have been struggling to get my regular voice back for the last two days and thought it would be smarter to just stay home for a day and TRY to recover rather than try to speak over 21 hyperactive kids.

It all comes at a good time (if you can say there is ever a good time to develop Laryngitis) though, report cards are coming out on Monday. My first experience writing and doing report cards: FREAK OUT. First, I thought I had a LOT of time left.. but low and behold.. I only have about 2 weeks to get my butt in gear. That means, gathering assessment, MARKING (I hate marking, especially Language Arts), and trying to find supporting proof that my marking isn't completely insane. It's tough.. I mean, how can you grade a child's "Confidence in own ability to learn"??! I can't really SEE THAT?!! Plus, I'm not altogether happy that I haven't had time to do anecdotal comments on my kids.. just because my class is crazy.. I don't have time to even track the BAD behaviour let alone whether a student knows how to count past 100.. (seriously, many of them don't know how to do this at the age of 8.. it's scary).

Speaking of scary things, students these days are ridiculously.. rude? I get kids that burp and fart without any shame. I get kids who are just plain rude in that they will go behind a piece of fabric covering my shelves and help themselves to whatever they want. I get students who just interrupt me when I'm talking to another teacher or adult. It's hard to believe that at this age, they still don't know their manners. Furthermore, the gyrating I have seen is really disturbing. The girls do these Britney Spears moves and I'm appalled. I've caught some of them wearing makeup and sticking these shiny stickers on their noses to pretend that they have nose rings. What happened to something called CHILDHOOD!?!?!? OH ya.. and why are these children watching movies like Pirates of the Caribbean at the age of 8!?!?!? Anyhow, the result of all of this: schools are expected to teach children: manners, values, social skills.. oh ya, and curriculum?

Anyhow. That's my rant about it all. OH ya, just one thing to end off on. I got a note in a student's agenda the other day, it read "Dear Ms. Tan, please speak to ___________, she is misbehaving at home". I HAVE NO COMMENT.

That last comment is insane. While I thought there were plenty of people who neglect to do parenting I didn't think you would find a parent who actually thought it was your job to do that.

So weird, so scary.
